    The difference between that near the listener (それ) and that over there(あれ) is that when you are talking to someone and the object is near them you would use それ. When the object is away from both of you then you would use あれ. An example would be if you were in a classroom and you wanted a piece of paper that is next to your friend. In that case you would use それ. Now if you wanted apiece of paper that was up in the front of the room on the teacher's desk in which neither of you are sitting by (cool people sit in the back anyways... =P) then you would use あれ. Hope that explains things. :]
