    You could probably get away with that :P

    Since I don't live in Japan I don't know how well that fits in xD

    うわ!それは熱い女子です!
    That would be my best shot at translating that xD
    Keep in mind that I'm still in the very early stages of learning adjectives so I just left it in its dictionary form since I don't know what to do with it yet :P

    Yes, 熱い is often used the same way hot is used in English too. But there is also a culture differences of perceiving female in Japan.

    As the culture in Japan is more about feminine, or childish rather than masculinity, females are perceived as cute or beautiful creature rather than sexy creature. So although 熱い can also be used the same way hot is used in English, for example to describe hot situation or hot items or hot trends, but hot girls is rarely used.

    可愛い (kawaii) and 奇麗 (kirei) is used much more often.

    If I have to translate "dayum, that girl is hot!",
    I would translate it to "やばい、あの子めちゃ可愛い!"

    Because personally, I rarely say that girl is hot, or hot girls, I see more of the cuteness in girls rather than the hotness (regardless of the race of the girl). ꒰・◡・๑꒱

    @beeant That's pretty much what I figured ha ha great explanation!

    ありがとう ございました。 I love using kawaii over hot, but I just wanted to get that straightened out... there's also a problem with 熱い and 暑い I'm pretty sure they both mean hot, but the vocabulary 5 and google differ. @beeant

    暑 = 日 'sun' + 者 'someone' = sun above someone = 'hot' (weather).
    熱 = 火 (灬) 'fire' + 埶 'art' = fire underneath art = 'hot' (thing).

    There's obviously more to it than that... like you can break down 埶 into 丸 'round/perfection' + 坴 'land/lump of earth', then further break down 坴 into 土 'soil' + 圥 'mushroom'... no idea where I'm heading with this now...

    Just wanted to say that kanji radicals and components are interesting, or at least my vivid imagination thinks so. :P

    @mog86uk that's how I remember my kanji :p just some nice radicals and stories to go with em xD

    So 熱い is a hot item and 暑い is hot weather?
  • mog86uk
    Well, it doesn't just mean simply that. I was just trying to demonstrate how looking at the kanji components can give more detail to help with understanding/remembering what a word means.

    I should probably have emphasised more, that in 熱 the 埶(art) is ablaze, on fire, heated by flames, burning, etc. You can kind of get a feeling of why 熱い would mean things to do with passion, emotions, temper, a hot topic, ... rather than 暑い which the 暑 is literally has the imagery of a dude feeling a bit warm on a sunny day or in a warm place...

    There's more to 熱い and 暑い than just hot item and hot weather though. This is just a method of figuring it out. A dictionary is better for finding the meanings of words. :)
