古い町 ->ふるいまち an old town ですね。 町(ちょう)is for a name of the place or address. For example, 神田神保町(かんだじんぽうちょう)、神奈川県川崎市◯◯町(ちょう)etc

Kanji has 2 different ways to be read. The onyomi (Chinese "sound reading") and Kunyomi. In this case ちょう is the Onyomi of 町. Onyomi is used when the kanji is just by itself without hiragana beside it. And Kunyomi (まち) is used when there is hiragana with it such as 古い町. But this isn't always the case, you'll just have to keep studying and learn as you go. Kanji is a difficult subject but I hope this helped :)

Also the onyomi is used when there are multiple kanji's as in mogmog-san's example ^^
