Hmm... I've been wondering... Shouldn't there only be vocabs/kanji in the practice section that we have already encountered? Because...you know, you are there to practise what you have learned?
Because I always get vocabs/kanji I have never seen before and that's a bit irritating if I just want to refresh my knowledge... I thought the lessons are for new material?

Or am I completely wrong? Or is there an option to turn new vocabs/kanji off? :O

You raise a good point. The best you can do right now is to disable levels that you haven't finished yet in the practice settings. I personally like the fact that new words pop up because they are only added slowly so that I can pick them up on the go. However, if that's the idea behind the practice function then perhaps practice isn't the most accurate description.

Ah right, I will try that, thanks!
Generally speaking it is really not bad that new words pop up.
But I have noticed for myself that I am randomly guessing how they might be read or what meaning they might have - because of course they are new!...and by the time they show up again I can't remember which one was the right answer cause I haven't studied them yet :/
But that might really be just me. Doesn't seem like others are bothered by it, or at least I haven't seen anyone mention it.

I'm bothered by it too. Because of this, I find myself discouraged to use practice for a certain level until I've been through every single lesson within that level.

I'm glad I am not the only one...
It messes up the statistics a bit, too, simply because it's just guessing whenever something new pops up (I mean, we are here to learn sth. and not to have perfect scores...buuut it does look nicer...).

    Oblivion section maybe?

I don't have an Oblivion section.... Where can I find that?
  • Flightless
I don't have it now either, but I think I've seen it before. I don't think it'd make any difference to this problem, though.

Oh wait, I think I remember the Oblivion section. It contains the words you haven't practised in a long while or something, right?
But yeah, that wouldn't help. Turning off the chapters should do the trick I guess!

I'd like either an option to turn on/off new encounters, or just smaller sections of a level instead of the entire thing.
  • VanillaQiwi
    Yeah that would be nice.

Other people have mentioned this quite a few times before, however Practice is working the way it was designed to be. I think the name 'Practice' means 'Japanese practice' not 'JCJP lesson practice', although the Practice questions are the exact same questions you learn in the JCJP lessons.

It does seem like it would be more logical for Practice not to show 'new' words you haven't learnt yet. However, I personally prefer that it shows new words. Attempting to figure out the answer for new words before I'm taught what the answer is. You can learn stuff from doing this. I've only done half the lessons, but I've completely finished all the questions in Practice. It would be kinda annoying if all the lessons I haven't bothered to do suddenly stopped showing those words in Practice... :P

It would be nice to have more options though, like an option for turning on/off new encounters. It might better if Practice was disabled until people complete chapters 1-10; then you can keep Practice set to 'level 1' until you complete the higher level chapters. Maybe, if you haven't completed all the lesson chapters for a level, then that level in the Practice Settings should be turned off by default (but you can still turn it on if you want)?
