from my own experience I think it's better to know the vocabulary/speech first when learning Japanese - like at least for me I didn't just jump in learning kanji because I didn't even know how to write hiragana and katakana let alone know a good amount of vocabulary. Humans don't learn how to write at the same pace as how we learn how to speak and pick up language from hearing. Other people may have different views on this but I think it's a good idea to learn vocabulary first before trying to tackle kanji?? I don't know if that answers your question I'm sorry ^^'
