Hello, My name is telly. I saw you are at a higher level then me and doing well, I am new to this site and would greatly appreciate your help. I'm not sure how to start off. I began trying the Hiragana and Katakana, although I am not sure what exactly I do. Am I just supposed to memorize all the characters an sounds for each? I would be happy if you could give me pointers or advise! Thank You!

hey telly :) im new to this site as well and I have no idea where to start off. What I did so far was memorize the Katakana (vocab) and learning how to say it first...and then moving on to Hiragana. From the practice session they would give me a word like: がくせい and what i did is find the syllabbary on the (Hiragana chart)
    が -ga
    く -ku
    せ -se
    い -i
meaning student. But, my friend said its best to avoid changing it into romanji and be able to read Hiragana in Japanese instead. And watching anime and learning Chinese/Mandarin helped me alot! ^ ^

You need to know both to be able to read Japanese. It may seem hard at first but its easy to memorize if you make little pictures out of the characters.

せ se looks like a (se)ringe in a guys arm.
く ku looks like a kookoo birds mouth.
つ tsu looks like a giant (tsu)nami wave!
    や ya looks like a (ya)ks face!
き ki looks like a key if you turn your head sideways.
の no looks like a (no) smoking sign!

You get the jist. If you paint a picture for each symbol you can literally memorize the entire list in 1 day. I did and I am a slow learner.

    GL to you.
