guys when you practice hiragana and katakana are you supposed to listen to them and find the answer or find the answer by memory?

You should try to remember the sounds without listening to them. :)
It's good to learn them vice-versa too, i.e. learn to write the character from the sound (from memory).
Both should be fine.
I also suggest taking a lot of quizes/practices and try to write them, this is how I learnt them in the end. :P
