- If you break it down and study, it is said to be a good method. I've only done a few songs that I've long forgotten now. I did "ozaki yutaka - i love you" since it is slow and a well known song full of emotion. I like music from Greeeen, but have not gone out of my way to study the songs.August 26, 2014 at 4:00am
- I'd say listening to music doesn't help too much in your early studies, but it's still good to do for exposure to pronunciation of Japanese. I've only noticed recently, that if I stop and concentrate a little, then I can actually recognise nearly all the words and grammar patterns in the songs I've been listening to. But until fairly recently, most of it just sounded more like a blur of noise instead of actual words. :P
For vocaloid, I really like Akiakane's stuff. It's not something I normally do, but I did what Kimbo suggested recently and broke down the lyrics in couple of her videos, which did feel like a very effective study method. It helps that the Japanese text is on the screen in many of her videos, so made it easier to figure out some of the words. Also funny that GreeeeN has been mentioned already, because I nearly decided to do the same thing for one of their videos a couple of nights ago. The song was "Ai Uta", which is the first one of theirs I heard years ago. I still think it's one of the most beautiful music videos ever! GreeeeN would actually be a decent band to listen to the words of, because their music is reasonably slow and the voices are easy to hear what they're saying.
The Japanese music I'm normally into is loud hard music. A lot of the bands are kinda very weird, so I actually hope I never understand too well what some of them are saying... :D
Here's a few of these: Maximum the Hormone, T.M.Revolution, Gackt, X-Japan, Art Cube, Moi Dix Mois, L'arc en Ciel, The Gazette, Onmyouza, Kamomekamome, Dir en Grey, Foreground Eclipse, High and Mighty Color, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Crossfaith, ...
I listen to a very varied range of Japanese music though, even groups at the complete other end of the spectrum like Morning Musume and Perfume.
Here's a few of the probably more normal bands that I really like: Asian Kung-fu Generation, Flow, Home Made Kazoku, Rip Slyme, Radwimps, Yui, The Pillows, Plastic Tree, Orange Range, Aqua Timez, ... ^^August 26, 2014 at 3:14pm - Thanks for the advice guys, I am also into The pillows, I started listening to them after I saw FLCLAugust 31, 2014 at 2:26pm
