    I think it's more that JLPT is more what is aimed for by foreign learners of Japanese. Kanken is aimed more at Japanese people. Kanken tests usage of kanji only right? whereas JLPT tests grammar also and doesn't focus on kanji so much.

    I'd expect many people on here have actually heard of Kanken (Kanji Kentei) from webpages like this:

    Have you passed "pre-2" and now aiming to pass grade 2? Level 1 is insanse -- It examines in detail your knowledge and reading/writing ability of 6355 kanji! Must take an incredible amount of study hours. O.o
