I'm still learning kanji myself, what I do is I take it a step at a time like learn the meaning of a few words, then work on the readings, followed by the stroke order if you are up for that.
I used that method (Heisig's RTK). I really liked it, because it makes it super easy to understand and remember the meanings. Now I basically just have to learn readings. I strongly recommend it. But take the book seriously - don't rush. Take your time making up the stories.
