so how do I use this website and actually learn and retain the information and not just remember patterns and shapes? or does this only work when used with other methods of learning Japanese ?

I'm just figuring it out too, click the left tab and choose lessons, tap 1 and then study it, after that click on the right tab, scroll down and take the test for that lesson
Just study as you would with a textbook. Repetition ..
