'September 30, 2014 at 1:01pm - 'neko' is the proper word for how to say cat.
'nyanko' is like how we sometimes say 'kitty' in English--it's another word for saying neko, but is more childish and colloquial.September 30, 2014 at 2:58pm - you can also say "koneko" to say "kitty"
CmiiwSeptember 30, 2014 at 5:39pm - 'koneko' is very specifically a young cat, a kitten. I would never call an adult cat a 'kitten' (as long as I could actually tell the difference)!
I think I would probably still say 'kitty' for adult cats. Like if I was trying to get a cat to come over to me, I might say "here kitty kitty", especially if I was with some young children who want to play with the cat. Kitty is like a pet name way of saying cat, and I think 'nyanko' is kind of similar, but I don't really know.
neko = 猫 (cat) = cat
koneko = 子猫 (child cat) = kitten
nyanko = ニャンコ = "kitty"September 30, 2014 at 11:57pm - Oops, apparently 'nyanko' should instead be written in hiragana, which makes sense actually...
