It's fairly recent that I've become familiar with hiragana and katakana. I would say I recognize most of the characters well, but I still struggle with a few. Can anyone give me tricks to remember if I'm reading "sa" or "chi" (さ & ち). I tend to struggle with these two the most, but also with シ & ツ. Any good tips to help remember these are appreciated.

Unfortunately it's just a matter of habit. Exactly as for ソ and ン

My rule for さ and ち is in Spanish, but maybe it can help you find another one for you...
ち is similar to the number 5, in Spanish "cinco", so I started saying "CHInco" as a mnemotechnic rule.

For roman-Language speakers the sound ち is really easy.

Repetition. Things like the hiragana practice on here are good for speeding this up. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, you'll pick it up naturally over time from exposure.

I bet people learning the alphabet for the first time must hate these four letters: b d p q
...that's probably more confusing, especially in computer fonts like what is used on this site. :D

(I meant to include this link to the hiragana & katakana practice. I often wonder if many people never notice this page exists, as the link in the lessons is not completely obvious.)

as a french, i think about the holy grenade (SAinte grenade) for さ.
for ち i see a B, like in CHIbi (small)
