Hey guys, me again, with another question (ofcourse :P). Is it necessary to learn all the kunyomi and onyomi readings of a kanji? For example: the kanji 生 of the word 学生 has 18 (!) kunyomi pronounciations and 2 onyomi pronounciations. Learning 20 pronounciations for 1 kanji is quite alot of you ask me (although I could just be really lazy). So is it necessary/useful to know all of them as a beginner?

For a beginner... Not really... if you will start learning the jōyō kanji then do it without the readings since you are a beginner. This way will learn the meanings and will familiarise with their forms, their strokes. Then start learning vocabulary, for example: 学生、明るい、etc。This way you will learn the vocabulary and at the same time the readings of each kanji. It's useless to learn all the readings of each kanji because you won't know how to use them.

If you will start learning the jōyō kanji, this is a good place to start: http://www.memrise.com/course/141583/2136-joyo-kanji-by-grade/

Allright, thanks for the advice! I will definitely check out memrise and I guess I was too ambitious for a beginner :D.

There is no need to memorize all at once all readings of a single kanji. Just learn them as you go by giving priority to the most common readings.
My advice is: try to learn them in context, through reading short stories or whatever you can tackle right now.
As you keep studying, you will find yourself knowing the different readings for any given kanji without really stressing too much about it. :)
    Keep up the good work!
