Are you trying to learn japanese all by yourself?
  • DS25
    Which manga are you reading?

....so you're just learning to read manga? No long term goals? wow..........sorry to break it to you, if you have no long term goals......you'll give up....

stick to reading it in english......

I hope you realize that it will take years to be able to speak, read, and write japanese at a basic level.. Long after your favorite manga would end.

If you have no long term goals, like 99% of us do, we all advise you to give up...I see it all the time on the internet. Wanting to learn japanese just to read manga then they give up because it's taking so long...

This isn't a joke. If you have no legitimate reason to learn Japanese, don't waste your time. Because not only is Japanese one of the hardest languages to learn, it's also one of the most time consuming, taking at least 10 years with immersion to be able to master this language, around 2-5 to have a basic concept to read and write.....

No need to sound rude, but I see it every time. I look on forums, people saying they want to learn Japanese to watch anime and read manga. They quit the next week.....Get's on my nerves...I sometimes wish, (a lot of the time) that manga wasn't even invented.....then I wouldn't get a headache.

^ Could not have said it any better myself Kenji!

I have been studying for approximately 3/4 of a year with a minimum of a hour of study a day and can only read/formulate basic sentences. I just think of Japanese as a hobby, it makes studying fun and relaxing.

To be able to read manga, you don't really need to be able to speak or write at all... :P

I don't have any long term goals either. I just really enjoy learning Japanese and my only real goal is to be able to read it without too much struggling.

I definitely think anime and manga can be appreciated better even just being able to understand bits of basic Japanese. It also helps if you can read and recognise the Japanese titles of anime/manga to be able to find them online easier. Also it's helpful for being able to buy related stuff from Japanese websites and for being able to navigate the menus of Japanese software (which often mostly involves being able to read English sounding words written in katakana). ^^

Kenji's advice is still good though. It is extremely time consuming learning Japanese. It is going to take an insane amount of time away from your life. It will likely take several years before you can actually read manga written in Japanese... and even then, it likely will still be a tiresome task where you'd rather just wait for the English translation to be able to actually enjoy it while you're reading it. But if all this isn't much of a concern to you, then definitely best of luck with your studies! Have fun. :)

Lincoln: Yes. There's actually no one near me that knows how to speak or learn or write in Japanese. Therefore,I have to learn in it by myself. My parents won't enroll me in a Japanese class or school. In my country, there's only a small fraction of people that could understand Japanese. Very small.

DS25; I'm done reading with The bride of the Water God and it's still ongoing.

Kenji; Why would you need a long term goal just to learn Japanese? I know it takes time and by the time I can understand Japanese,my manga would be completed then. But that doesn't mean I have to stop learning. There's always tomorrow as long as you're alive. And as long as tomorrow exists, there's always manga to read, anime to watch. Just because I don't have a long term goal doesn't mean I should stop learning a language that I like. I may not be like you guys. You guys might be an exchange student at Japan, that's why you need to learn it. But for me,I found that it is exciting when I was able to write Hiragana, understands what the anime sayin',what the manga said. That is my goal. The goal doesn't have to be big or long. I just need to have a reason why and that is reading manga without any problems & watching anime without the subtitles :) I found that Japanese is fun to learn. I think Mandarin and Cantonese is way harder. Mangas and animes is the reason why I have to learn it. If it didn't exist,I won't be interested in Japanese or the country itself cause that will make Japan the same as other countries. No specialties.

mog86uk: I know right? But I enjoy writing and speaking in Japanese. It made me feel like I have spent my whole time learning Japanese worth it. It feels like,I don't know how to describe it but it feels really satisfying when I know I'm capable in reading, writing and speaking in Japanese :D

    Are way harder*
  • silentboxer
    That's admirable

Well, being able to read ALL kind of manga isn't really an easy goal. It's not like everything out is as easy as the random shoujo manga.

I've been studying Japanese every single day with not one day of break for 8 1/2 months with at the least 1.5 hours a day. Sounds crazy but it feels natural to me, like going for a run or something. Actually just like going for a run, exhilarating and rewarding. As for my progress, I'm not sure as it's hard to measure this. But, I can watch an anime called しろくま cafe without subtitles and understand probably ~Half the words they say and the story well enough. Also I'm able to hold a conversation in Japanese for hours, but only on a basic level and slow speaking. I'm really proud :D and still lovin' it.
  • mog86uk
I was watching しろくまカフェ last night (episode 48, with English subs) and was thinking that, especially with Sloth's talking speed, I really don't really need the subtitles. :P

I kind of forgot you can turn the subs off on Crunchyroll. Shame I only realised that now, right near the end of the series, as it must be one of the most ideal animes to practice Japanese listening skills. I wish there was a Japanese subtitles setting though... I thought about buying import DVDs from Japan but they are ridiculously expensive, as you can find out on the official website:
    http://shirokumacafe.jp

    Each volume is 4500円 without tax, 4 episodes per volume, 13 volumes... So, the whole series on DVD = 58500円 without tax (£312 / $487) and then there's still delivery... And I couldn't even find out whether it definitely contains a Japanese subtitle option, which would be awful if I actually bought it and found out it didn't, lol!... Why does stuff in Japan have to be so stupidly expensive?! ;_;
  • Kira123
You guys are really amazing. I hope that my hard work will pay off just like you guys did (≧∇≦)
  • Kira123
So expensive! (°_°) I can even barely buy my own personal stuff.Since I live in Malaysia and used Ringgit Malaysia(RM) instead of dollar,it would be like RM1200+ for just the whole series (T ^ T)
  • temrpro43
Yeah, it's a shame that anime/manga in physical form is so expensive! 高すぎる!Otherwise, I would be willing to pay the cost of say any other movie (~10-20$+)
