Since I have some free time, I am only doing the Readings every night. The same kanji and vocabulary re-appear, so it is getting a bit easier. But there are a bunch of new ones that drive me nuts! How do all of you kanji and vocabulary masters get near-perfect scores on the Readings? I envy you. Well, back to bed I go. Good night, everyone. :)

I've gotten 100% on most of the Readings quizzes I've done. For me, instantly knowing the meaning for nearly every one of the ~2000 Jouyou kanji I've learnt makes answering the quizzes fairly easy (thanks heavily to Slime Forest Adventure).

A couple of times I've gotten 100% without even looking once at the vocabulary list before I started the quiz. This is even though much of the questions were words I'd never seen before. You can just look at each kanji in the question and work out which answer is most likely. As long as you know the rough meanings of kanji and have a good imagination when putting the kanji meanings together.

It also helps that I usually have a reasonable background knowledge of the topics talked about in the articles I read.

That's how I answer the Reading questions as well. I break up the kanji characters (example: 選挙, 選 means selection, 挙 means behavior, so voila, election). I also ignore the bottom of the reading articles, which displays all of the vocabulary and kanji answers. Of course, silly me, I sometimes choose the wrong answer accidentally and realize it a second after it is too late.

@mog86uk I've seen you mentioning Slime forest adventure before. It sounds good for kanji. Do you have to pay for it?

@takitogr There's a free version which was recently extended to teach all the gradeschool kanji (the first 1006 kanji in the Jouyou list).

But the full version is only a $20 one off payment with free updates, which teaches all the 1945 "Common Use" kanji (Jouyou kanji, from the list before it was changed in 2010). The full version contains the full story and has more features like for compounds and kunyomi words, and more grammar training than the demo.

I really like it, and learning stuff there and coming back to JCJP and doing some Practice works really well together. ^^

If it was on android it would definitely have worked better for me but I'll download it and see. It sounds really interesting. Grammar training as well! Nice. It works like typing of the dead :) Thanks.

Hm. I tried downloading the demo version and Avast says that it's malware. :( I'll re-download it some other time. Maybe on the next update or in a few weeks.
  • mog86uk
Avast says it is malware when you first click the download link?

Avast is actually the anti-virus program I use too. I've used it for several years. However I usually have that browser security plugin turned off so I had no idea about that. I've scanned the file on my computer before and Avast didn't have any issues with it.

The SFA download section has a note for Avira users - http://lrnj.com/aviranote.html - about that antivirus not liking SFA, and on that page it even suggest people use something better without this problem like Avast! lol. It should be possible to just ignore the malware warning, instead of having to wait for a new version to be released.

Avast is fine with the current full version of the game when it is on my computer, but I haven't checked out the demo for a while. :)

When I'm finished downloading and Avast scanned it. It doesn't let me save the file (well unless I recognise it as a false positive). I don't have Avast's browser plugin either.

@everyone I found out last week that I have not cleared my Incomplete Readings section of my statistics page. I have 92 pages to go. :)
  • kekkou
Correction: 18 pages, or 91 "old" Reading quizzes to go.
  • mog86uk
@kekkou 18 pages?!! How come you left so many Readings quizzes unfinished? o.O

One thing I notice though: The more Readings (and Notes) you do, the longer it takes for your own user profile page to load. @kekkou, your profile page (243 Completed Readings) seems to take around 20 seconds to load, but adkdcmorgan's takes even longer (546 Completed Readings) at around 35 seconds to load.

I think if it goes over 60 seconds loading time, then it is impossible to load the user profile page as it will time-out instead. So this will be a problem if someone completes 1000 Readings quizzes. I don't know how to feel about using the Readings/Notes section because of this issue. :/

I was ignoring the Readings because I was testing out the new site when it went live earlier this year 2014, I was working on a second movie screenplay. Now, I have free time. I also noticed the statistics page is slowing down, like you mentioned.

@mog86uk What I meant was ... I answered only one question in certain Readings when I was busy with the stuff mentioned above, primarily to let everyone know I was checking this account every now and then.
  • mog86uk
@takitogr I often have Avast completely turned off. I made sure it was turned on and downloaded the free version of SFA. I see what you mean now. That pop up message is kinda hard to ignore, but I guess you can just turn Avast off temporarily to download it...

I reported the problem to Darrell, the guy who makes SFA. And I filled in the forms and sent false positive reports back to Avast. Most other antivirus programs are fine with downloading SFA, but occasionally some flag up SFA as "low reputation" simply because it is not from a major software publisher/site or isn't a file which is commonly downloaded. There's nothing wrong with the file at all, and Avast actually allows a virtually 100% identical registered version of that file through with no issues.

Can see on Virus Total how other antivirus programs regard that file -- 46/56 antivirus programs are fine with it:

@kekkou Ah, I see. Good way to let people know. That must have taken a lot of effort to complete those 91 readings in the two days between your post above and your recent one? o.O

omg mog86uk. You're seriously awesome. Thanks for all that. I really appreciate it. I'll download it on my next day off and make good use of it. Sounds like it'll help me with my kanji studying :)
