I still can't download Slime forest Adventure. Avast antivirus mentions that it has malware. Meh....I so want to try it out. Seems like such a nice way to learn kanji....

- I have no concrete evidence, but I'm pretty sure avast antivirus is basically invasive spyware that serves no real purpose. I had to remove it from 2 computers to fix their problems and I've always avoided it.January 10, 2015 at 4:28am
- Try malwarebytes. It doesn't offer real time protection unless you pay for it but it is pretty good otherwise. Avoiding malware is pretty easy for the most part and in case something does get through, a malwarebytes' scan once in a while will get rid of it.January 10, 2015 at 7:18am
- @takitogr I recommend replacing the antivirus software. The UK has other excellent antivirus software programs available for purchase and download. Norton Security UK is available at http://uk.norton.com for £39.99 (1-year protection), and probably won't find any viruses nor spyware in SFA. McAfee UK is at http://home.mcafee.com/Default.aspx?culture=EN-GBJanuary 10, 2015 at 9:50am
- Thanks for the advice. Manjus which antivirus do you use then?January 10, 2015 at 9:52am
- @takitogr I know you were asking @Manjius, but just FYI ... I use Norton Security. :)January 10, 2015 at 9:57am
- @washoku actually I saw your message after I posted mine. Thanks. I've used both of them in the past and I found a bit too heavy actuallyJanuary 10, 2015 at 10:08am
- I like Avast. I've used Avast for several years as my only antivirus software. My family have had it installed on many different machines with no problems.
The only problems we've had are when buying new machines with Norton or McAfee preinstalled, where after a few months they expire and stop working, and then later I'm eventually told about this and have to install Avast on their computers to remove their viruses... Now I just delete Norton and McAffee even if it came as part of a special offer, because I know they won't pay to renew it, and I just put the completely free Avast on their new computers from the start! :P
@takitogr You can still download SFA with Avast on your computer. The simplest safe way is to make sure no other programs are running and have the SFA download page open. Then right-click Avast > Avast shields control > Disabled for 10 minutes. Download and install Avast. Then go back and click "Enable all shields".
Avast is definitely wrong about there being any malware in the install file for the free version of SFA. I've downloaded that file and there is nothing at all wrong with it. Once SFA is downloaded on your computer Avast is still suspicious because it isn't from a major software vendor, but Avast analyses it properly and determines there is no problem, and then Avast lets SFA run like normal. ^^
In my last post to you about this, I showed you that link where I uploaded that sfa.exe file to VirusTotal.com. There's no way McAfee, Norton, and 44 other virus scanners are wrong, while Avast and 9 other scanners are corrrect. Here's the link to that page again:
https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/9e73f3aca0191c7b6d33ceccf48f331a086cf4ae3ebd96a1ef740a4ee41079d0/analysis/1420215602/January 10, 2015 at 12:27pm - * Obviously meant to write"Download and install SFA" not Avast, lol. ^^;January 10, 2015 at 12:29pm
- @takitogr I've sent another false-positive report to Avast, this time in a slightly different way, as they don't seem to have done anything about this problem yet nor contacted me about it.
I did some more double checking. Scanning the installation file "sfa.exe" with Avast, it thinks it is malware. Immediately after installing the game from this file, when I scan the "Slime Forest" folder where the game gets installed to, Avast says "No threat found".
If you're not keen on turning Avast off to install SFA, there is a slightly more complicated way to install it whilst keeping all Avast shields turned on:
1- Open Avast user interface.
2- Click Settings > General.
3- Scroll down this page to where it says "Exclusions".
4- Add the file path of where you are downloading sfa.exe to, and click OK (to tell Avast to ignore scanning this file).
Example: "C:\Downloads\sfa.exe"
5- Download the free version of SFA from the website.
If you aren't using Google Chrome, you might not need to do anything else to get it working. If you are using Chrome like me, then you will need to do these following extra steps 6-12:
6- When the download completes, the file will temporarily be called something similar to "Unconfirmed 123456.crdownload". Because this is different to what you added to the exculsions list, Avast will still interfere and add the downloaded file to your Virus Chest.
7- Open Avast user interface.
8- Click "Quick Scan"
9- Instead of starting the scan, down the bottom of this window click "Quarantine (Virus Chest)".
10- Find the file you've just downloaded by sorting the list by date (remember the filename will be like "Unconfirmed 123456.crdownload".
11- Right click this file and click "Restore" to restore it back to where it should have been downloaded to (will still have this Chrome given filename though).
12- Find this file and rename it to "sfa.exe".
Now finally you can run "sfa.exe" to install Slime Forest Adventure without Avast interfering. All without turning Avast off at all, except from adding that one exclusion.
Or you could just do it the easy way like I mentioned earlier, lol! Hopefully Avast gets around to sorting this out soon, or Darrell figures out what it is about his installer that a few antivirus programs decide they don't like. xDJanuary 10, 2015 at 3:03pm - @takitogr I just use the free version of malwarebytes anti-malware, as wahaj suggested. I don't like real time protection. But I study computer science so whenever something infects my computer, which rarely happens, I can get rid of it very quickly.
I also use adblock plus on chrome, which may not be an antivirus but it prevents tons of popups in websites that you can get virus from. Also make sure every software you download is from a website with a rating system and comments, and check the comments to make sure they're humans typing.
Don't necessarily trust links from trustworthy people, even if they mean well, (my last infection came from a teacher lol)they could be already infected and not know it, so double check.
And never install all that free crap that comes with some programs sometimes, ex: yahoo toolbar.
Basically if you're careful with the files you download you shouldn't get viruses etc.January 10, 2015 at 6:44pm - Malwarebytes is perfectly happy with that installer file for SFA, as you can see on that VirusTotal link I gave. So either Malwarebytes isn't very good at detecting malware or Avast is just wrong. :P
I don't see any reason to switch antivirus software just because of this one small issue though. I've used Avast for about ten years now and it is a decent antivirus software in my opinion.January 11, 2015 at 1:39am - I've used Avast for some time now and I'm happy with it. If you also check ratings and awards for antivirus programms Avast comes on the top spots of lists. (too lazy to seach now :))
mog86uk I really appreciate your help. You're ace. You were right about no threat found. I knew how to disable the shields but I didn't know you could exclude a folder from Avast scanning it.
@Manjus adblock plus is not enough for safe browsing. You need a script blocker as well like scriptsafe for chrome. and an antivirus. and a firewall.January 11, 2015 at 3:37am - I'm gonna run it now and start typing :) yey!January 11, 2015 at 3:37am
