    "Arigatou gozaimasu" is more formal, I believe.

    Pretty much arigatou is thank you, and arigatou gozaimasu is thank you very much. At least that's my understanding but don't take my word for it.

    I think you mean どうも, right?

    どうも → originally meant "very" or something along that line
    どうもありがとう → thank you very much/so much (pretty formal)
    However, now, if you just say どうも alone, it means "thanks". But I'm not sure if you can only say どうも in informal situations or not.
