    そうですか?私の母も日本語を話せません!

By the way, I wonder if it's considered odd or slightly rude if you refer to your mother by her name. I think that if you were to talk to a native speaker, you should say "母は日本語を話せません" instead.

You wouldn't refer to your mother by her name in English either, right? Surely that's something which is odd/rude in any language/country?

There are very few times I've ever referred to my mother by name. Usually it only happens when there's a need to explain clearly who you are the son/daughter of. Or maybe when answering the phone at your parents house there are situations it happens.

Maybe it really is different in other countries though?

From my understanding, Japanese normally would not say: 「僕の母」or 「私の母」but just 「母」, as saying just 母 implies "my mum" already. In your sentence maybe you could use「お母さん」instead?
Also, did you want to use potential form of 話す? I think official correct grammatical form will use が not を「母は日本語が話せません」。

mog86uk, I think it just depends on the family. Me and my brother call our parents by their names all the time!
    Thank you though!
