I am running a few tests on JCJP EXPs. My first test was the chapter 51-54 tests (Kanji) then doing two Practice quiz questions. I noticed that if I answer 1 question incorrectly (Kanji Level 6, Lessons Chapter quiz), then answer a Practice question, my all-time EXPs (top of the page, blue bar) reset to ZERO. Do not worry, since refreshing the page again should reveal the correct all-time EXP balance.

hello washoku, thank you very much for your report. Do you have two tabs open, one on kanji chapter quiz, and one on practice page?
  • washoku
Also, as expected, making mistakes in the Lessons chapter tests will NOT affect the Practice combo bonus. @mog86uk I used the same tab/window when testing this theory.

    Sorry, change @mog86uk to @beeant

Also, my second test was seeing if the same questions are being asked in more than one chapter test. The answer is YES. It seems many test questions (same level in the Kanji area) are asked AGAIN in different chapter tests.

Yes, making mistakes and answering correctly in lessons would not affect combo. That's meant to be like that. Same window? so after you do the chapter test, you go to practice, answer a question, and your exp bar on the top reset to zero?

@beeant Yes. I tested on Safari for mobile devices and Safari for Windows 7. This only occurs in Safari for MOBILE DEVICES.

My third test (Safari on a mobile device) was to see if there is a delay after clicking/tapping the "Post" button. Social Feeds (no delay. Chat (less than 2-second delay for 日本語, slight delay for English). Thanks for your help, @beeant.

I was testing if there's any problem with sign up, and first hiragana & katakana tutorial quest. I'm wondering why there are quite number of newcomers who don't continue on gaining EXP points.

@beeant I've also frequently wondered why newcomers can't find the Hiragana and Katakana lessons. Many users try to start on vocab/kanji lessons and don't seem to know about the kana lessons.

When I made a new account a couple of months ago, I was shown that big red arrow which points to the kana lessons link (unless you give the wrong answer in the pop-up message). I had been saying that the link to the kana lessons (the "For Beginners" section) is too hidden away, being on the side bar. However, that big red arrow seems like it should make it clear enough.

I had a few thoughts as to why newcomers may not be able to find the kana lessons:

・If the wrong answer is clicked accidentally in the popup that asks if the user whether they already know kana.
・Maybe some users get annoyed with the arrow and just want to get rid of it, without realising it was important.
・The pop-up message / big red arrow might not work if the user is using mobile view?
・The pop-up message / big red arrow might not work in some browsers?
・In mobile layout, maybe users don't notice how to show/hide the left and right side bars (especially on computers where the user doesn't realise they're not seeing the full view, because they don't have their browser window maximised), so they can't figure out how to get back to the lessons page.
・In mobile layout on computers, the buttons to show/hide the side bars do not function at all in Firefox and Internet Explorer, so users of these browsers may think it's impossible to access the menus.

@mog86uk I brought the second-to-last issue (mobile layout side bars) to @beeant last year, but we could not think of any better replacements for the "三" and "..." icons.

@beeant and @mog86uk Also, I believe most new users either: (a) already know their kana and want to go straight to learning kanji and vocabulary, OR (b) they do NOT know the kana but they want to try learning 語句 (words and phrases) by ONLY studying the Chapter Lessons and take the Chapter tests and Practice quizzes when they have mastered the kanji and vocabulary 語句.
  • washoku
@beeant That is probably why some new users' all-time EXPs are still zero.

The style of the icons isn't too bad, but currently they're not set up correctly to perform their function in Firefox and IE. I'm fairly certain their functions can be changed to make it work in these browsers too.

It didn't take me too much effort to figure out what those icons were there for when I first saw them in Chrome. However, it might have been different if I was a new user and had never seen full size layout--if ever since joining I'd never made my browser window wide enough to know it existed. I think people on mobile devices would be likely to be on the look out for icons like this, but unfortunate users on computers who didn't realise they were using mobile layout may not even think to look for this.
