So what's with the Chinese characters thing? I've heard that there are Chinese characters in Japanese, is that true? If so, why?

- Kanji symbols were originally Chinese and adopted by Japanese but the date isn't known when they adopted it. Although they may look the same they have completely different sounds and meanings, so a normal japanese person can't read chinese kanji and visa versa. Japanese actually have two different ways of reading kanji because of it: http://www.tofugu.com/2010/03/23/the-types-of-kanji-in-japanese-onyomi-vs-kunyomi/
Japanese weren't the only ones to do this, Koreans have a system they adopted from them as well called Hanja.April 27, 2015 at 4:51am - Kanji symbols were originally Chinese and adopted by Japanese but the date isn't known when they adopted it. Even that's somewhat complicated because the japanese language itself is often considered one of the hardest languages to learn, which is talked about much more simply here:http://www.languagerealm.com/japanese/hardestlanguage_jp.phpMay 2, 2015 at 7:36pm
