I am a complete beginner at japanese, and I don't know where to start or anything. Usually when you first start english you learn the alphabet first, but is there an alphabet of characters in japanese? Or is it like chinese where each character is a word?

Yes there's Higarana used for phonetics, katakana for foreign words and Kanji which is pretty much the Chinese characters. You should start with hiragana and katakana first, maybe check out Tae Kims guide online, that's extremely helpful. It should be worth mentioning you should aim to learn all hiragana and katakana within or around 2 weeks:p

you could also study kana ( hiragana and katakana) on this site by going to lessons and in the upper right hand corner you will see the kana lessons. hope this helps.

@lu11, SamNatsumi has already said where to find the lessons, but just in case you have trouble finding them, here's a link to the page:

This is where you need to start on this site. ^^
