Konnichiwa! Can anyone please clarify me how do you pronounce "r" sound in Japanese? Though I've covered a number of lessons but still I don't get how to deal with 'r' sound. Sometimes, like in songs etc. it's spoken like "l" (as in rekishi) and sometimes "r" without alveolar tap (like in kore, are). What's this all about?

What you do is curl your tongue to the roof of your mouth when making a r sound. Your tongue natural flicks when making vowels.

^I agree. Depending on the sounds around it sometimes you flick more or less.

Matter of my question is that I'm confused because I hear Japanese people saying "r" and sometimes it's like in between "l" and "r". For example, "rekishi" is more like "lekishi" and "hajikaru" is "hajikaru (with common r sound)" So is it always a flicking 'r' or sometimes you gotta use "r" instead??

Well it depends on pronunciation. For instance, eru sounds like el. No one is using an L sound. Its just when they use their R constant, it phonemically sounds like a mix. Robī for lobby sounds close like an L. While other Japanese words sounds like R. Again, its about tongue placement and pronunciation.

It pretty much is between an L and an R, you say it as you would pronounce an L, but make an R sound as best you can while flicking your tongue as you would create an L sound? xD it's not as hard as it seems. And most times can be barely noticeable
