This is a good question. I am curious about it too. You are not alone haha

start with katakana and hiragana first when you master them move on to kanji it will be a bit more easy if you learn katakana and hiragana first and when you learn kanji try and imagine a image that look like the kanji it will hep you remember it. and learn them faster.

Try searching for (Japanese) children's kanji learning materials online. Also, read children's level books. renshuu.org can help with learning the different aspects of a character, as can memrise.com

Where it ends? Where do you want it to end? Even native Japanese do not have a complete understanding of every kanji even in the 常用漢字. Reading is one thing, but many can not write many of the kanji from heart if they needed to (this is more a consequence of the advances of technology - why remember stroke order when you can just type in the reading, press space, and presto!).

When does learning kanji end? The same way as learning every word in the Oxford English Dictionary ends... NEVER! :P

I have a program on my PC which lists the 49,964 kanji from the Dai Kan-Wa Jiten (Great Han-Japanese Dictionary) and also still has extra characters...

But yeah, a good target finish line is to learn the 2,136 常用漢字 (Common Use Kanji) which Japanese kids are taught during school up to the age of 18 at the end of highschool.

Maybe you want more of a challenge though? Check out the Kanji Kentei kanji test levels, where the highest level tests you on 6,355 kanji, haha:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji_kentei

If you want to see a list of all the 2,136 Common Use Kanji, check out this page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_joyo_kanji
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joyo_kanji

Where to start? Kanji lesson 1 on this site (or just start at the top of that really long 2,136 kanji list and slowly work your way down...). But also it's a good idea to go learn some basic kanji radicals first and do a bit of reading up about kanji:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simplified_table_of_Japanese_kanji_radicals
