Had a conversation in Japanese with my language exchange partner today, it was difficult but he said I had gotten better recently which made me happy.

I feel its defenitely harder to speak than write or type out. Good luck!

I don't know about writing (as in writting by hand), however typing definitely seems easier than speaking. For a start you can take your time, rechecking what you've written, easy access to a dictionary or whatever. You can write out multiple versions of the same sentence to figure out which one looks more correct when you read it back, then pick the best one. You can write your sentence in English and rearrange things into a Japanese sentence order and the fill in the Japanese equivalent words and particles.

When speaking you have to come up with the correct grammar and vocabulary on the spot. If you're in the middle of a conversation, you can't really check a dictionary mid-sentence. I'm not liking my chances of being able to speak anything in Japanese having not practiced having conversations at all. It's good that you are practicing this. ^^

Yes, but in a conversation, depending who you are speaking to, of course, there are many more ways of saying the same thing. With writing, you need to take that time to make sure the terms are correct for both the situation and who you are writing to.
