Knowing Chinese may give you an advantage in learning Japanese but right now, it may be holding me back because every time I see a phrase in Kanji I automatically read it in Chinese or if I'm doing a test here I find myself "cheating" by reading the Kanji in Chinese. Does anyone else have this problem?

What is your level is Chinese?

The problem is that I could easily confused with the sound because I could easily mixed them up...

Japanese also has multiple ways of reading a kanji whereas Chinese mostly have 1 or 2 ways to read it... now I look at a kanji 人... it has 9 ways to say it... 7 sounds in Japanese and 1 in Mandarin and 1 in Cantonese.

Overall, I would say it's a very good advantage and it's definitely not cheating. We spend years on memorizing kanji in school years.

I bet every Chinese has the same problem...It can be frustrating when you can understand some of the kanji but you don't know how to read them in japanese..
