I just started yesterday and wanted to know how long should it take me to get done with hiragana and katakana? Should I learn both at the same time or work on one before the other?

- Also, should I use any outside resources?November 4, 2015 at 1:58am
- Usually people recommend to start with hiragana first, as it is essentially like the default alphabet. Katakana are used in more specific situations. It's a bit like how you don't write everything in capital letters in English but only use them for certain purposes.
As for other resources, I'd suggest to practice writing the hiragana and katakana tables on paper too. That is the main way I learnt them, but I also used computer quizzes similar to the one on this site. Worked well for me. ^^November 4, 2015 at 2:16am - I learned Hiragana before I started to learn grammar and vocabulary, now I am reviewing Katakana. I think you can easily learn it in one week.November 4, 2015 at 2:17am
- Thanks for the info! I can't wait to start getting into it. :)November 4, 2015 at 2:20am
- And yeah, as mog said, write it on paper is very important.November 4, 2015 at 2:22am
- seriously, you can learn hiragana in one week? seems pretty hard for me to remember all of the symbols in a single week o: But well you probably used more time than 1h a day like me .. im on it since 2 days and i only have ~7-8 hiragana yet and I dont even feel remotely safe on itNovember 4, 2015 at 3:32am
- In one week I could remember all Hiragana and some Katakana. A good strategy is to practice in short periods of time, sometimes a day, rather than practicing for a long period of time. But it depends on you, everyone learns differently.November 4, 2015 at 4:19am
- Yeah I can do 15 now. Its really pretty fast if you just write it down repeatedly. And probably just review what you did, a day before this should help memorizing them for a longer timeNovember 4, 2015 at 4:22am
- That's good. When I first wanted to learn Japanese, I gave up because I thought I wouldn't be able to learn the Kana, but it was when I was 16. Now I am 17 (I will be 18 this month) and I am very motivated to learn Japanese.November 4, 2015 at 4:31am
