  Tamago is written 卵 in books and on packages, and is probably the one you should use when writing. 玉子 is mainly used on the menu of Japanese restaurants. Both are correct.

  合う is used for cases in such: They're eyes matched each other. 目と目が合った
  
  matching your taste / clothes matching you:
  これは私の口には合いません。 this doesnt suit my taste.
  この靴は私と合わない。 This shoe doesnt match me

  卵 is the proper term. 玉子 is a colloquial term for hen's eggs, using different characters ("little ball") to phoneticize "tamago."
  
  For prepared meals like a hard-boiled egg, you'd use 玉子. For eggs that are uncooked, and all other cases unrelated to food, use 卵.
