Does anyone know... is there a difference between「 私は本を読みます。」and「私は本を読んでいます。」Because they both translate out to be "I'm reading a book." I think, but I don't know if there's a difference or if it's just a preference thing...

本を読んでいるところです。
「私は本を読んでいます。」has 2 meanings: 1) You read some book(s) regularly (every day, every other day, 1 day a week and so on)
2) You're reading right now
私は本を読みます。」meanse something like "I read books" like a fact, or "sometimes I read this particular book". Irregular meaning.

読んで is the Te form of 読みます making it an action that is currently taking place。So as Annaletoile said the first is like a general statement (I read books/a book) while the second is an occurring action (I'm READING a book).
