- I find kanji hard to memorize too, especially since they sound different on their own compared to if they were used in a word >.<January 24, 2016 at 9:46am
- I feel more comfortable saying the word than actually writing it. Every time I would learn a Kanji and write it in a sentence, my mind just went blank. Then, I'll have to go back and look at the Kanji. Lol. >.<January 24, 2016 at 10:01am
- ooooh i see ! >.< Do you find it easy learning them individually like in the Kanji lessons? i struggle to memorise the structure and the meanings to them individually haha ! But writing them is fun when you practice the stroke order heaps ^^January 24, 2016 at 10:23am
- The kanji order here do not goes into a "radical" sequence for what I've seen(I started today) So my advice is use "kanji damage" and "remembering the kanji". If you do not want to buy those books, you can pick their mnemonics in the internet, in sites like koohi.kanji(or kanji.koohi, cant remember). The most important thing that you need to know is that they are actually made of blocks. For example, the kanji for bright is a mix of the kanjis for moon and sun.
Please, have caution with "remembering the kanji". Some kanjis have very different means and it give you only 1. Maybe you gonna like to see the other meanings at jisho.org. Search this way: #kanji PUTHERETHEKANJI
So, the most important thing is:
Kanji are made from parts. Learn those parts! You can even use this way only with kanji you are having trouble.
Use mnemonics! Many times - more in pictographic and ideographic compounds - those mnemonics will clearly have relations with the meaning of the kanji. In the other cases, you should be creative :)
Memrise have some decks of "remembering the kanji". I'm actually using ANKI with "All in one kanji deck" but I don't know if this is the best way .-.January 24, 2016 at 11:03am - hai, that's really good information, i understand a bit better ! they are different when they are by themselves or in a word right ? i always have abit of trouble doing the kanji lessons considering some are by themselves and some are combined.. Ill get there soon :DJanuary 24, 2016 at 11:13am
- When they are together, sometimes they have the same meaning, sometimes other, sometimes practically no meaning - at least, no meaning that can help you-, you just manipulate them to make it easier to learn.January 24, 2016 at 11:38am
- My method to learn Kanji is by writing, remember it by radical not how many stroke the kanji have, i also learn the kunyomi and onyomi reading, so i will not confused when reading the kanji in the long sentences. I hope it helpsJanuary 24, 2016 at 11:52am
- true ! guess just look at different examples and take the quizzes frequently should help ^^January 24, 2016 at 12:53pm
- Thanks! It actually helps.January 24, 2016 at 1:11pm
- 1. 5rree5 is right. learn the primitives. "Remembering the Kanji" (also available on iphone) gives you a rough idea if not an exact translation, but is helpful. Remember Japanese can't be translated perfectly into english without losing some of the context.
2. Make a story up in your head using the primitives and the word u want to remember. This skill takes time to perfect but is essential in tackling the task of memorizing 2200 of these pictographs or characters.
Example : 妬まし(netamashi) the kanji for jealous is made up of 2 other kanji rock石 and woman女. One way to remember 妬 is to imagine that all women are jealous of each others rocks or stones. woman + rock = jealous.
This can be pretty tough in the beginning but in time will become easier, and can even be fun. You'll find that your memory becomes quite sharp when elaborate images are applied. This process can be used for recalling any information, and has been for thousands of years. Have fun with it. God bless!
January 24, 2016 at 1:48pm - Mozeni2san, that actually makes learning Kanji a bit more fun ^^ it made me giggle with the woman jealous of rocks :P thank you heaps !January 24, 2016 at 2:12pm
