Japan? j/k. I'm guessing you aren't simply wanting a site you can buy manga imported from Japan (like just using amazon.co.jp)?

    http://www.ebookjapan.jp
This is what I use. It's a proper legit company. The manga is in digital format. You can buy manga on there significantly cheaper than importing but obviously you don't get a nice physical thing to hold. There's loads of freebies and you can download a sample few pages for every manga.

You can either read the manga directly within your web browser, or can use their computer program, or they have an app for Android, iOS, and Windows phones.

Since it is aimed at Japanese users the website and some of the software is fully in Japanese only. It requires a bit of intelligence to figure out how to use it, but I like it. Would be cool to hear other people's recommendations. ^^

I've bought the full colection of the black and white version of Shin-chan on there, just in case you were wondering about if I'd successfully managed to buy anything. So it doesn't require a Japanese bank account. :)

So I can buy manga on this website even if I don't live in Japan?

That'd be pretty cool. I have ordered some manga from Japan before and this can get quite expensive depending on the shipping method you choose.

This is a directory of webcomics, because of this format the manga in their list may vary: http://webmanga.info/

    Webmanga is free, pretty cool!

Oh. If you just want to read manga in Japanese for free, and if you're not bothered that you won't be able to find many big name titles, then the following legit site is a great one for that:

    http://www.mangaz.com

But I still highly recommend eBookJapan if you want to read manga titles you've actually heard of before. You do have to pay to buy the full copy of most manga on there, however you can read and download multiple pages of almost any manga on the site for free. They also have a few free starter editions for some manga like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Dragonball,... each one containing over 100 pages, which you can find simply by typing "starter" in the search bar:

@JulesK_7, Yep. Don't need to live in Japan. I bought the Shin-chan collection while in England and using an English debit card. They ask for your 住所 when signing up but one of the options in the drop down list is 海外 and then there are no more questions asked about it. :D

Ohh! That site looks nice! It seems to have a bigger selection at a glance (and consistency since it isn't a list of website links). Thank you for the link.

    Thank you @mog86uk :D
I already created an account on ebookjapan. Now I have to get myself a credit card so I can buy some Gintama manga XD

@JulesK_7, There are quite a few payment options other than just debit/credit cards, but I don't know if any of them are any help to you.

Before you buy anything though, I recommend considering whether having your manga in this format is really what you want. For example, if the company were to disappear some day, then there's a risk that it may become very difficult to be able to read all the manga you've purchased. The manga isn't stored in a standard ebook file format but rather in their own special format .ebix files. Without using their software there is no way to view it at all. And you need to be logged into their server to be able to load the manga you've purchased onto a new device.

You might decide you'd prefer to just pay double the price (or higher) and simply import manga properly in physical format instead.

I didn't mind purchasing the クレヨンしんちゃん manga on there, but I'm not yet sure I'd buy one of my favourite series in the same way. Maybe I still would. However I'm fairly confident that I'd manage to carry on accessing what I've purchased offline (using backups and stuff), even if one day that company no longer exists. I guess the scenario isn't really any different to buying games in digital format on Playstation and Xbox—digital media versus physical discs. There are pros and cons for both digital and physical I guess. ^^

@mog86uk Thank you for your advise. It would really suck if the company went down and the purchased books couldn't be read anymore. But I think I'll take the risk and hope this won't happen ;)

    Thanks again :D

I would like to recommend Manga Rock you can download manga for free and you can read it in Japanese and English
  • mog86uk
I had Manga Rock on my phone for a short while only a few months ago. It didn't have any manga available in Japanese language when I used it, although it did have Chinese and some other languages... I don't think this has changed?

@JulesK_7 hast du schon dort etwas gekauft?
