  Here is how to tell the difference. 持つ is to have, and the kanji has the HAND radical http://jisho.org/search/%E6%8C%81%20%23kanji

  they're different.
  待つ（まつ） using a radical called gyouninben and have a meaning waiting.
  while 持つ（もつ）using radical called tehen and have a meaning bring(an item).
  there's a slight difference.
  待、持、寺、時、など。。。
