    Distance. You'd use その for something that's close to the person you're speaking to, but not yourself, and あの for something far away from both of you.

    sono = that
    kono = this

    as far i know these are usually used before a noun

    You use these when the noun is implied
    are
    sore
    kore

    "ano neko wa kawaii desu"

    that cat over there is cute
