Hi there! 初めまして I'm new here. I already know (very) basic japanese, kana etc, but I'm trying to get better, to learn more vocabulary and to learn more kanji. My first question is: Is there any way to turn off romaji in vocabulary tests? They keep getting in my way because somehow I can not NOT look at them. Thanks!

- When you go into practice, click on the settings icon and modify as you wish.September 6, 2016 at 8:39pm
- I can only switch kanji and kana on and off. I want both, but then I have romaji, too. At least in the available choices for answers. Oh well, I will get used to it.September 6, 2016 at 8:49pm
- What do you mean by romaji? I have never seen any romaji on this site.September 6, 2016 at 9:01pm
- There is no way to eliminate romaji when practicing vocabulary.September 6, 2016 at 9:07pm
- @FelliVox the conversation site is up again.
September 6, 2016 at 9:08pm - yeah, I meant explicitly the answers when practicing vocabulary. It always gives me kanji, kana and romaji for the possible answers. But nevermind, it's nothing major. I just thought I might have missed the option for this. Thanks for the help.September 6, 2016 at 9:11pm
- I have never noticed any rōmaji... Maybe we have a different understanding of what rōmaji is? I understand rōmaji as the kana/kanji reading written with the English alphabet. Like 怪我 (injury, hurt), けが (hiragana), kega (rōmaji). Maybe Olphas refers to the English meaning as rōmaji? Because that's not rōmaji, it's just the English meaning.September 6, 2016 at 9:23pm
- turning the kana and kanji buttons on/off doesn't make any difference, it used to.
September 6, 2016 at 9:23pm - It works if you only uncheck one of the two. I just unchecked the "Show Kana" and when the word comes up in English the choices only appear as kanji.September 6, 2016 at 9:30pm
- The reverse also works. And when you uncheck only the "Show Kanji" when an English word comes up it shows the kana choices. It also shows the kana reading under the kanji that pop out.September 6, 2016 at 9:34pm
- Okay. Here is what I mean. When doing vocabulary tests let's say the english word is "chair" and I have to pick one out of four options for the correct japanese word. The right option looks like this:" 椅子 - いす - isu ". Kanji - kana - romaji. Those romaji in the answers are the ones I was hoping to disable.September 6, 2016 at 9:35pm
- wasn't trying to make a big deal out of this. It was just a simple newbie-question. :)September 6, 2016 at 9:37pm
- What the hell? I have never had rōmaji pop out like that. Like I said before, I have never seen rōmaji on this site. That's weird. Maybe it has something to do with newly registered users? I registered half a year ago and rōmaji had never dared to appear before me.September 6, 2016 at 9:42pm
- Try to play around with the settings in practice. Uncheck one option and do 5-10 items, then restore it and uncheck another. There aren't many so it won't take much, just see if it disappears with some combination or just by itself. I've seen some weird shit happening to applications on the web that make no sense, so I can't say what's wrong there.September 6, 2016 at 9:46pm
- They seem to be bound to the kana-setting and only appear in "vocabulary" - question mode. And in tests for vocabulary chapters under "lessons" I don't have any options to influence this. Only in regular practice. But as I said, it's nothing major. I was hoping I missed some "global setting" for this. Just found it weird, as I'm trying to get romaji out of the way. I think it's best to get rid of them as soon as possible when learning japanese to get used to fluently read kana.September 6, 2016 at 9:57pm
- Wait a minute, I know what you mean, I think if you are on the beginning levels, romaji translations appear next to the kanji/kana ones. As you advance, the romaji goes away.September 6, 2016 at 9:59pm
- イス・いす(isu)September 6, 2016 at 10:03pm
- Are you still on Level 1?
September 6, 2016 at 10:06pm - Wow, really? I never noticed the rōmaji when I started. I guess that goes to show how much I ignored them.September 6, 2016 at 10:15pm
- yeah, I just started today (found this site yesterday) and I thought it would be a good idea to start at the beginning. I know most of the words on level 1, so I guess I will put this behind me rather quickly. Good to know that the romaji will disappear. Thanks to all for your help!September 6, 2016 at 10:32pm
- It really appears to newcomers, huh ? When i create my account (Some years ago), there wasn't that roomaji, i guess. It will disappear eventually. To veterans ~> http://imgur.com/tKhv3nK
I didn't know about the roomaji there ( ̄ω ̄;), even my another account didn't have it. I think is like this to FelliVox too. The website probably thought that newcomers couldn't know how to read it, so roomaji is needed, but you are just practicing so it bothers you.
This is how it looks to me ~> http://imgur.com/sibvYmWSeptember 6, 2016 at 11:17pm - Well then. The mystery is resolved! Congratulations.
I wonder where beeant went. I haven't heard of him in a long time. I guess this site is not that profitable after all and was more of a passion project.September 6, 2016 at 11:40pm - Put simply: Romaji is only shown while you are level 1. Earn a total of 4,000 EXP to level up to level 2. Once you are level 2 or higher, all romaji disappears (even the romaji in the level 1 chapters). ^^
If you are really desparate to hide the romaji, I actually made a custom userstyle a while back to do this. If you have a userstyle browser extension, like "Stylish", go on the Vocabulary lessons and click "Find more styles for this site". ;-)
(Also, @FelliVox, Beeant posted on here only a couple of weeks ago and can be seen on the Online Users List most days... usually somewhere near the bottom of the list, like me, lol.)September 7, 2016 at 4:47am - Well, I was on vacation a week ago, must have missed it and with the occasional (frequent) spam posts, it's no wonder I did. And I even forgot about that Online Users list. I guess I'm too focused on the practice itself, which is great.
But really, let's stop posting here since it's gone way off topic.September 7, 2016 at 5:18am
