I'm pretty sure 8 is the highest level - either that or it takes an incredible amount of exp to get to 9, in fact, so much that nobody has it yet xD

I think it might be the same as with level 7 and 8 ー where Beeant waited for the 500th user to reach the current maximum level before a new one is added.

    http://japaneseclass.jp/user/ranking?page=14

We're currently at 374 level 8 users. So, if it's the same as before, we need another 126 users to hurry up and reach level 8. ^^

Well, 374 is not bad. Hope this Fall it will work out. Thank you mog86uk!

It's not that hard to reach level 8 (I think). I've been around only for 5 months so far but I do find 8 levels to be too few/easy. There are some Kanji we haven't seen at all here, yet anyway according to what you say. One example of a Kanji that you cannot find here is the Kanji for zero/0 which is "零" and its read as "れい".

@strawhat64, Of the 2,136 kanji in the Jōyō list, a total of 1,298 of them can be seen on here so far (although only 815 of these are individually taught in the Kanji lesson chapters). So, in the current 8 levels we have here so far, the number from the Jōyō list that haven't made an appearance yet is actually 838 kanji:

    ・First Grade (80) = 0 kanji
    ・Second Grade (160) = 0 kanji
    ・Third Grade (200) = 0 kanji
    ・Fourth Grade (200) = 0 kanji

    ・Fifth Grade (186) = 15 kanji
    承織属損銅徳燃肥俵貧武墓貿夢綿

    ・Sixth Grade (181) = 50 kanji
    域拡閣筋敬憲后孝皇紅鋼策冊姿至射尺縦熟純署蒸仁垂推誠善奏蔵尊担忠著展党脳派拝肺班批陛幕盟幼乱覧臨朗諸

    ・Secondary School (1,130) = 773 kanji

(But, outside the Jōyō list, 34 out of the 862 kanji in the Jinmeiyō list are seen in the current 8 levels on here, ...along with an additional 28 kanji that aren't in either Jōyō or Jinmeiyō lists! So there are a total of 1,360 kanji that can be seen within levels 1 to 8 on JCJP.) ^^

    * Fifth Grade (185)
↑Just noticed I made one typo in my post. It was meant to say 185 kanji taught in fifth grade of Japanese elementary school, not 186.

↓↓Some clearer statistics of JCJP lv1~8 current kanji count↓↓

A= kanji *taught* in JCJP kanji lesson chapters 1~80.
B= kanji *seen* in JCJP levels 1~8.
C= the total number of kanji that exist for this group.

     -A- -B- -C-
      80| 80| 80 ← First grade
     160| 160| 160 ← Second grade
     200| 200| 200 ← Third grade
     200| 200| 200 ← Fourth grade
     121| 170| 185 ← Fifth grade
      29| 131| 181 ← Sixth grade
      25| 357|1130 ← Secondary school
       0| 34| 862 ← Jinmeiyō list
       0| 28|???? ← Other
    Combined Totals:
     790| 941|1006 ← Kyōiku list (elementary school)
815|1298|2136 ← Jōyō list (inc. Kyōiku)
     815|1332|2998 ← Jinmeiyō + Jōyō
     815|1360|6355 ← Kanji Kentei 1級 (highest level)
815|1360|>50K ← All kanji in existence!

When next level will come out, Fifth grade and Fifth grade should be full too. What is the difference between Joyo and Jinmeiyo?
  • mog86uk
@DragonR33UA, Yeah! It might be possible that the 216 remaining Kyōiku kanji will all be taught in the kanji lessons with just two more levels being added—each level having 10 chapters and each chapter having 10~11 kanji (adding up to 200~220 kanji). ^^

The 教育(きょういく)"education" kanji are the most vital part of the Jōyō list to learn, as all 1,006 of them are used heavily.

The secondary school part of the jōyō list on the other hand includes quite a number of kanji that aren't actually used often at all (such as 璽), regardles of the name being 常用(じょうよう)"daily use" kanji list...

人名用(じんめいよう)"person(人) name(名) use(用)" kanji list is just like how it sounds. Along with the 2,136 Jōyō kanji, these 862 additional kanji have also been permitted by the Japanese government for people to use when registering the name of their newborn child or when changing a name. This means the spelling of people's names is restricted to using only those 2,998 kanji (and also hiragana and katakana).

...As far as I how understand it anyway. And I've read that the Jinmeiyō kanji are also taught in secondary school too, but I'm not sure whether that was correct. ^^
  • mog86uk
Looking back at those 838 kanji I posted earlier, some of the grade 5 and 6 ones actually look much more rare than I expected. Of the grade 5 ones, 俵 "sack, straw bag, bale" is so rare that doing a sentence search with it on sites like Jisho.org finds 0 results!

There are secondary school kanji missing which seem more significant—like 僕(ぼく)and 俺(おれ)just for starters... Might be nicer to see ones like them make an appearance before things like 俵. ^^

But anyway, a whole day has passed and we haven't had a single new lv8 user (still at 374), so... XD
