Hey beeant, now that you're back, do you have any plans to implement a countermeasure for spammers?

I think shirokitsune gave the idea of an initial challenge. Something like, you have to reach level 2 before you can comment. Or answer 20 practice questions correctly. This would likely prevent most of the spammers from posting, since it'd be too much work just to spam. But the other side would be that the genuine new users would also have an obstacle if they had a question right after registering.

Another alternative would be to implement some sort of moderation. Something like the userscript mog86uk wrote for himself just to see if it worked, when he posted [SPAM] on a post, it would hide it in the feed (only in his browser, since it's a userscript). This would require you to give that right to someone trustworthy and that uses the site every day (the ones on the first page of the rankings should have proved their motivation to learn Japanese, if nothing else).

I really hate spam, it annoys me to no end. I'd be glad not to see this site become an infested pit of spam. Maybe I take this too seriously. I probably am. But it's undeniably annoying to see long, unrelated posts of garbage when you refresh the main page to see if someone needs a question answered.

the [SPAM] command is a good idea. From this I'm thinking to implement a vote feature instead.

Vote? Seems like a good way to spread the power over multiple people, but there could be problems with people ganging up on someone they disagree with... Maybe make it so only level 8 users can vote on whether a comment is spam. Although the good thing of having a relatively small (compared to big sites that require moderation) community is that we don't get as many assholes.

The problem with this approach is that whenever spam appears, it will stay there until a number of people mark it as spam. Dunno how fast that would be.
