- Slurping is funny to look at. At least for the first few times, then it becomes outright disgusting.December 9, 2016 at 4:38am
- Slurping your food is a harder skill than it looks. If you are not used to doing it because it's bad manners in your home country, then it takes a considerable amount of conscious effort to make the slurping sound. At least, that was my experience when I attempted to do it when eating ramen in Japan... ^^;December 9, 2016 at 6:01am
- It is difficult. I have been in Japan for 4 years and still can't do it. My wife always asks me if my food is alright because I don't seem to be enjoying it hahaDecember 9, 2016 at 8:22am
- Yeah, from the videos I've seen, foreigners trying to slurp their food for the first time the Japanese way look ridiculous to Japanese people.
In my case, I hate the sound slurping makes. I have a bit of misophonia, so I get really annoyed when I have to eat with people. If I see someone eating with an open mouth I permanently lose any sort of respect for them that same instant. They become simple cattle in my eyes.December 9, 2016 at 8:30am - Take everything and make it betterDecember 9, 2016 at 12:57pm
- Eat KFC for ChristmasDecember 9, 2016 at 12:58pm
- I don't like to slurp. Ramen is always very hot and hot noodles burn my mouth.
Funny? Middle aged salary men that go crazy over teenage pop 'idols.'December 9, 2016 at 11:31pm - Slurping ramen is not polite, its a nessacity (is that spelled correct?) to fully enjoy the taste of ramen. The air that comes with the slurping brings out the taste! Its just part the food.
Not slurping ramen is just idiotic.December 10, 2016 at 3:21am - Edwin, dunno about necessarily, but "idiotic" is kinds rude, I think.
en.rocketnews24.com just had a post about slurping saying: ≪slurping is not so much “thing you do to be polite” but rather “thing you can do and people won’t think you’re rude.”≫, but also ≪in fact it’s a sign that you’re enjoying the dish≫. Fits well with what shirokitsune wrote, lolDecember 10, 2016 at 4:08am - Are there any books on slurping? Sometimes you meet books that specialize on very specific stuff.December 10, 2016 at 4:27am
- @wigglysquire, Yeah, haha. I've heard about that KFC at Christmas thing before. Don't know how true or how widespread it is though. I guess you'll find out this year?December 10, 2016 at 9:15pm
- it is very true...The advertisements start in November for making your reservation at KFC. You don't eat there but pick up your chicken and take it home.December 11, 2016 at 10:56am
- Yea I've already seen the advertising for the KFC Christmas bucketDecember 12, 2016 at 9:44am
- I have heard that slurping is more of a tool used to actually enjoy the food more thoroughly than not slurping. I initially thought that this is done so one can finish the raman while it is still hot. I haven't considered that it might alter the taste.December 14, 2016 at 10:40am
- Yes it does, like I said, adding air brings the taste out. Think about when a wine expert is stirring his glas of wine, and then smells and tastes it. Something like that. Not slurping is more of an insult towards the food itself, because you don't bring out its full potential. Of course, this is all a big Japanese grain of salt. Personally i don't care about it, but because it's part of the food, don't think about it, just do it!December 15, 2016 at 3:40am
- Disgusting.December 15, 2016 at 6:26am
- HahaDecember 15, 2016 at 6:34am
- I actually think slurping is fun. After a long week of working hard, I love going to the local Pho restaurant and getting a special beef soup, large size, putting a bunch of lime and siracha into it. Then, I'll eat as fast I can. I usually slurp to cool it down so I can continue to eat fast.December 15, 2016 at 11:25am
- I don't condemn anyone for slurping, it's their choice, but my choice is to avoid those people because I find them disgusting. Another reason I will never go to Japan since the place is full of those.December 15, 2016 at 7:26pm
