Went to Bali for my honeymoon this past week. I was shocked to find that most of the store employees preferred to use Japanese over English. I also saw tons of English signs saying Learn Japanese here or at this school we teach Japanese. We even talked to a tour guide, that my wife said was way better at Japanese than me, who only started learning Japanese 2.5 years ago... She also has never been to Japan. She admitted that she cant read but her spoken Japanese was fantastic!

Yes, there are lots of people who can speak Japanese in Bali. I think it's because Bali is a place for vacation and there are so many Japanese tourists goes there. So a lot of them are motivated to serve all the tourists to the max by learning English and Japanese. It's similar to Hawaii, a lot of people in Hawaii can speak Japanese too.

So that's why there is バリ島 in the dictionary %3
I know a few situations with lack of English in some countries, whose tourist profit is coming for non-English speaking countries.

yes its mainly because of the increasing income from Japanese tourists and Japanese cultures in Indonesia. Bali has been the best tourist spot in Indonesia for many years and most of the locals is now fluent at English and socializing with tourists. Now they want to focus on Japanese as well, not only Bali tho, many parts in Indonesia want to learn Japanese including my hometown, Bandung.
