Recently we were talking about the app "Kanji Study", which, though I said I used it a lot (gone through all its 6383 different kanji), for me it is still only my second most used Japanese learning app on my phone. The Japanese learning app I've used much more than that one is "Kotoba-chan" (nowadays it's named "Kotoba" in the Play Store). I really like it for the huge amount of vocabulary it quizzes, which I've not managed yet managed to count but is definitely more than 24,000 words!

Just curious if anyone else uses Kotoba(-chan) too? ^^

I don't use it (yet). But I saw when you talked about it recently and got interested in it. Thus, I downloaded it to check it out. I didn't get to use it much, but from the first minutes I spent figuring it out I somewhat liked it, and intend to try using it more in the near future. It looks like it may be useful.

The app I used the most before coming here was "Obenkyo". I dont think it has as many words as "Kotoba". I liked how I could control what I'm being tested on, and how the quizzes work.

Yeah, Obenkyo is decent too. I haven't used it for a couple of years now though, since I changed to Kanji Study for kanji and Kotoba-chan for vocab.

I like apps which I can do easily while walking my dog, which Kotoba-chan seemed to be better for.

Obenkyo does have more features and customisation than Kotoba-chan, but one major advantage Kotoba-chan has is that you can view example sentences for the word you just answered. I use this feature A LOT, as it's just a tap of a button away and pops up instantaneously. The sentences help me to better understand newly discovered words and the words I get wrong. ^^

Yeah, that really does sound useful. I'm just not using it yet cuz I'm kind of on the beginning of learning. So, I can't really read phrases or understand much. But I have it installed on my phone for when I decide to start tackling it @@

It's the first time I hear about this app. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Can it be used offline?
  • mog86uk
@miharusshi, Yep. The sentences part works offline too. There are no ads either. :)

    Yay! Thanks, mog!

    Does it have a SRS?
  • mog86uk
@Hielke, It doesn't use a proper spaced repetition system, but what it is using is vaguely like one.

In the settings menu there are three settings to configure. One of these is "Training Bias", which sets the "bias of asking less or incorrectly answered questions more often", where you can set it to "very strong", "strong", "weak", or "no bias". A bias of showing weak questions more often than those you're good at is part of how SRS works, but it's lacks the other aspects of SRS.

The other two settings in this menu are for choosing whether to display furigana in the quiz and/or in the example sentences. I've always had it turned off for the quizzes for an extra challenge. ^^

I prefer a SRS but I don't think the app is bad so I think I am going to use it later
