I can learn kanji with ease, but distinguishing and remembering them are a problem, forcing me to use kana until a later time.

Well, 'till now, you are not writing with a brush, are you? That would require you to know what you are writing.
If you know the Kana reading of a Kanji, you can let the IME convert it into Kanji for you (just push the space bar!). If there's more than one choice (likely), you can often guess wich one you want. And if you can't, just choose one and check it later for correctness. That's not so difficult, and it's useful as training for recognizing Kanji, too.
