Okay, its pretty rare that I ask any questions, but I can't find an answer to this myself.

In the Settings screen for for Google Japanese IME, the first setting 'input mode' has four different settings: Romaji; Kana; Romaji (switchable); Kana (switchable).

I want to use the switchable setting to switch between Kana and Romaji keyboard 'input mode'. In Microsoft IME you just click the 'KANA' icon on the language bar; in Google IME the 'KANA' icon does nothing (for me).

I've tried to find out how you're meant to switch input modes with the 'switchable' setting by reading through the Google 日本語入力公式ヘルプ, but these help pages are only written in Japanese.

日本語の入力方法として、ローマ字入力・かな入力を選択できます。 Windows では、ローマ字入力(切替可)・かな入力(切替可)を選択すると、かなキーによって入力方法をすぐに変更できるようになります。

This seems to suggest that you have to press the 'KANA' key on a Japanese keyboard layout. I added this key to my own keyboard layout using special software. This key does switch input mode in my Microsoft IME, but still does NOT help for Google IME.

Does anyone know if the switchable option actually works? Anyone tried it and for them it works? I know I'm probably being too optimistic asking this on here... Maybe someone knows a better place I could find the answer to this problem? Thanks. :)

I'm searching through the Google 日本語入力公式ヘルプフォーラム, but it's all in Japanese too. I've found some people talking about this feature, but I'm not sure if it's the same problem as I have. Maybe I should post my question on there, but I think I'd struggle to explain my problem accurately enough in Japanese.

I should probably stop using かな入力 mode and use ローマ字入力, as that seems to be what virtually everyone else uses. Although, if I had to choose between only using one or the other without being able to switch, I think at the moment I'd prefer かな入力 as I've gotten to used to it. I normally switch to ローマ字入力 only for a few specific things, but I could probably live without ever using it at all. ^^

    too used to it *

@beeant By the way, which IME do you use? I'm wondering how popular Google IME is in Japan.

    I'm using Mac JIS keyboard.

Oh right. I could probably have guessed if I'd thought about it, since you wouldn't be using MS IME on a Mac... I guess that means you're using Kotoeri? I don't really know anything about Macs. >_>

yes, it's Kotoeri. It's really simple to switch between all kinds of inputs. You should get a Mac :)
