I thought it could be either かい or がい. o_o Someone help/tell me :D

私は日本人です。さんがい is correct but some people say さんかい, too.
    Grammatically さんがい is correct.

    辞書より
    さんがい0【三階】
    ① 建物で,地上の一番下の階から数えて三番目の階。

    教えてくれてありがとう!
    日本語を勉強した時には 3階 は 3かい と勉強したんだからちょっと分からなかったです。日本人と話すと今まで皆さん 3かい と言いましたから 3がい というのは初めて聞いたことです。覚えておきますように頑張ります。

    NHKによる、「NHKでは[サンガイ]しか認めていません。」

Maybe it would be the same for JLPT.

Anyway, since 3かい is also correct in present-day, I will remove 3かい from the option.

Even in dictionaries you can find 3かい, so thanks for the link! Never heard about it before :)

I kind of liked that questions like this are emphasised. 3階 question will be less useful now if 3かい is removed. There are other questions like this, so would they need to be changed too?

山手線, for example, has both やまのてせん and やまてせん in the list. According to dictionaries, apparently やまてせん is a valid reading... 山手線 is a helpful question, which caused me to go learn why I'd answered it wrong the first time. Should やまてせん be removed too? I hope not. ^^

That link you gave was interesting to read. :)

Out of curiosity I asked 3 friends of mine (Japanese) how would they write3階 in hiragana and all of them wrote 3かい. When I told them about the さんがい part they told me they never heard of it. :D

Interestingly, in Microsoft IME you can type either さんがい or さんかい and it will list 3階, but in Google IME it seems you can only type さんかい !

My late aunt (a native Japanese speaker) said in 2009 that the correct kana is さんがい.
  • mogmog
Sorry, people, I always returned your messages by emails, so you couldn't see my comments. lol
Well, you should learn it as "Sangai" it's correct,
but if you come to Japan, some, maybe most people say it "sankai"
So, you should remember "SanGAI" for your exams.
  • mogmog
Oh, my dictionary doesn't accept さんかい. Only 三階.
but, mog86uk said Google IME can't show さんがい.
You shouldn't trust Google IME lol But I like it very much.
I like it better than ATOK.

->I've heard of that, but not actually these days.
If someone ask me in a elevator which floor I will go, then I will say "さんがいをおねがいします。”

@mogmog ありがとうございます。I was actually starting to get confused myself after trying to convert さんがい in Google IME. Also a Japanese dictionary software I have (Tagaini Jisho) for 三階 lists さんかい as the standard reading and さんがい as an alternate reading.

It's very nice having a Japanese person on here to help learners. (Nice name too by the way!) ^^

It's my pleasure to help you with Japanese. (^O^)
Well, I made my name from the sound of eating. もぐもぐ
    It sounds "eat something". lol
    Our names are similar. ですよね。笑
Thank you for your information about the dictionary.
I have some dictionaries, paper and data in PC.
But the paper ones are not up-to-date.
So, next time I pass by a bookstore, I will search the word in some dictionaries.
  • mog86uk
'mogmog' sounds like the sound of eating?! O.o
Wow, interesting and funny. I did not know that at all... and thanks! :)
