Hi, すみません, but you said you use (or have used) Google IME? Could I ask a question about it? - Feed Post from mog86uk to mogmog

Hi, すみません, but you said you use (or have used) Google IME? Could I ask a question about it?

In this screenshot you can see that I have my 'input mode' set to 'Kana (switchable)' and you can also see my language bar.

When I try clicking the 'KANA' icon on the language bar, it doesn't switch. When I try CTRL + SHIFT + CAPS LOCK, it doesn't switch (this a shortcut for かなキイ). When I add かなキイ to my keyboard layout and click it, it doesn't switch. None of these 3 methods worked for me in Google IME, however all 3 of these ways work for me in Microsoft IME ! o_O

Are you able to switch between kana input mode (かな入力) and romaji input mode (ローマ字入力) without needing to go into Google IME settings and change it every time? It might work for you on a Japanese computer and keyboard. If it does work, what do you press? Thanks! ^^;

    I dunno dude, I use the Microsoft IME on Google? Is there an advantage to having two?
  • mog86uk
    Google IME is definitely nicer and easier than old out-dated Microsoft IME for typing Japanese. If you missed the recent thread where it was explained how to install it, check it out here: http://japaneseclass.jp/feeds/comment/4577

    It's very quick to install and uninstall, and you can keep Microsoft IME installed alongside it until you realise how much you prefer the Google IME (took me a long time to realise).

    For more discussion about what Google IME does better than Microsoft IME, check out an earlier discussion: http://japaneseclass.jp/feeds/comment/4530

    I see. I dunno, I'm pretty suited with M-IME now I'm used to it. I just press Control+1 to type in English, and Control+2 to type in Japanese. I would like it to save the hiragana settings but this takes literally 2 seconds when you boot up your computer, and having Japanese keyboard only on certain programs is advantageous too. I don't like change! Stayyy awayyyy! xD

    Heh, you know you could just set Google IME to Ctrl + 2. (Just click the downward arrow on the Language bar, click 'Settings', then it's on the 'Advanced Key Settings' tab)

    You won't even notice the difference, they're both extremely similar at first glance. One of the most major benefits of Google IME is auto-completion by pressing TAB when half-way through writing something. SPACE still does normal conversion. There's loads of other nice things though. You should check out this 2 minute video Google made for showing off their IME's special features. ^^

    Sorry, I use Mac, so I don't know the setting on Microsoft.

    i just used it now too, and maybe my question same with you how to switch between hiraganan and katakana, and what the meaning with full/halfwidth
  • mogmog
    I don't switch katakana. I don't know katakana mode.
    If I type katakana, I will type the word in Hiragana and change it into katakana like kanji (change).

     ー>aha, I got it but I don't know the solution... I used to use Windows, but there was a trouble about kana input and romaji input. Sometimes, it became kana input and it was hard to change it. I guess, I put control+shift or control +Esc? on the left top button (the button above 1)

    Thank you for replying. Is Google IME what you are using now on your Mac? If you set your input mode to ローマ字入力(切替可), are you able to switch between ローマ字入力 and かな入力 by pressing a button on your Mac keyboard?
  • mog86uk
    @devacto
    To switch to katakana try pressing 'Alt + CapsLock', hiragana = 'Ctrl + CapsLock', romaji = 'Shift + CapsLock'.

    Half-width and Full-width are just different styles of typing romaji or katakana, which you can select by clicking them on your language bar. Normal size spaces in English are half-width, Japanese size spaces are full-width (the size of two English spaces, because kanji and kana are wider than English letters).

    ok thx @mog86uk , and now when i type A not あ but chi (ち) and the other letter too, what have i wrong in setting?
  • mog86uk
    This is because you've changed your input mode to Kana, or clicked the 'KANA' icon on the language bar.

    A = ち is how kana input is supposed to work! This is what I use, but most people use romaji input (even most Japanese people).

    You will want romaji input. Make sure your input mode is set to 'romaji'. If you have a 'KANA' icon on your language bar (like you can see in my screenshot), make sure this is not selected. ^^

    your right and its need to restart to work, thx mog-san ^^

    どういたしまして~ ...Now if only someone could give me an answer to my problem! :P
    I've spent hours searching web, struggling through reading Japanese pages and forums, but I haven't found the answer yet... ;_;

    ->Some years ago, I tried to learn かな入力 before I already had learned ローマ字入力 to make my typing much faster, but it was a bit
    annoying to remember all kana typing, so I quit. lol
    I never use kana anymore.
    Well, I will answer your question. Mac has a great function.
    You can choose the input types you can want to use.
    So, I only choose 英数(Google) and ひらがな(Google)<-romaji-input, and in Mac you can change the input types "Command+Space.

    IME in Microsoft is something wrong sometimes. When I changed the input mode on the bar, but it didn't work well. It sometimes happened I was not able to change the input modes.

    Thank you very much for replying again. Sadly those links do not answer my problem at all. Those links only talk about Microsoft IME, however my problem is only for Google IME.

    I can already switch between 英数 (Google) and ひらがな (Google) in Windows 7 on my English keyboard by pressing 'Shift + CapsLock'. Isn't this the same thing? ^^

    The 3rd website link you posted DID actually mention which keys on a Japanese keyboard are for switching between ローマ字入力 and かな入力, but this only works in in Microsoft IME -- 'Alt + カタカナ/ひらがな/ローマ字'. Here's a quick video which shows a Japanese person demonstrating this in Microsoft IME:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-EbTzlQX3M

    Are you able to do the same thing as that guy in the video, but for Google IME on your Mac?

    Here is the official Google 日本語入力 help page for switching between ローマ字入力 and かな入力:
    https://support.google.com/ime/japanese/answer/166764

    It says to press 'かなキー' to switch?

    There's also the official Google 日本語入力 support forum, but I haven't noticed an answer on there:
