- It is important to learn the pronunciation first. Speaking from experience, I have an ugly happening of learning to recognize the kanji, and what it means in English, but not knowing how to actually say the word.
Step 1) Flash cards. Cliche? Yes. Boring? Yes. Effective? Yes
Step 2) Repetition. Find a nice kanji work book, like a bunch of blank squares. What you can do in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee is surprising.
Step 3) Repetition. Repetition. More repetition.
Step 4) Lay down, curl into ball
Step 5) Try not to cry.
Step 6) Cry deeply
Jokes aside, have fun.August 30, 2014 at 8:32pm - Check out Memrise - some of the kanji courses on there have some good memory aids. My personal recommendation is learning the word before the kanji. Good luck!

- Breaking up the kanji is one of the best ways. Take 休み for example: Katakana form of い and Kanji form of tree. Phonetically, remember "e-tree". Of course, memorizing the stroke order is also important.August 31, 2014 at 1:47am
- Kakka rot I got what your saying, but I was told many times study Kanji last. Speaking is the most important. If you know how to read some kanji great but don't burst your brain over it, so after that I don't as much. Most I remember is just seeing it so much from Japanese games, reading, and watching Japanese dramas with Japanese subs.
So far I'm learning from my Japanese teachers is being able to learn it the way they did as kids, and that's learning the history of each kanji. Hard but very interesting!
Enjoy guys! :)
