- The lessons have a hiragana and katakana learning section. Here's a link to the page:
http://japaneseclass.jp/lessons/kana
Learn the hiragana column first. Under each hiragana character it shows how to write its sound in English alphabet (romaji), and under this there is a audio button to hear the pronunciation.
After briefly looking at each hiragana in the table, go back to the top of the page and click the "hiragana practice" button. This practice is a quiz to match the hiragana symbol with it's romaji. Just keep doing this hiragana practice until you start to get all the answers correct. Then do the same as this for katakana. ^^
If you were actually asking how to translate the words "hiragana" and "katakana" into English, those two words themselves... well there aren't really any simple translations, but this is close enough:
hiragana = cursive script
katakana = angular script
The words are made up of two parts "hira + kana" and "kata + kana" ("hira+kana" is read instead as as "hira+gana", because of the way it naturally sounds when pronounced). "Kana" is a word that is used to reffer to both scripts: kana = hiragana & katakana (two types of kana).October 1, 2014 at 1:27pm - Another website that I found more helpful in learning hiragana and katakana was actually this one: http://unckel.de/kanateacher/
You dont have to sign up or anything. However this website allows you to chose which characters you want to learn, which makes it easier to memorize them. At least for me. =) Took me about two days for hiragana. With pauses of course ;) I got a little overwhelmed by all the different characters :DOctober 1, 2014 at 6:52pm
