When I was first talking to my friend about that and he mentioned that 'mansion' is the word for an apartment house I was so confused. That's one of the few I always read all the options for >_<
It doesn't help that I'm not really sure of the exact meanings of "apartment house", "apartment building", "apartment", "apartment block", etc.
Where I live, we call multiple-storey buildings with multiple single-storey residences a "block of flats" or just "flats". An individual residence within this is called a "flat".
The house across the road from me has apartments where their relative family live completely separate from the rest of the house (although this might just be an annexe)... Kinda sounds like this house with appartments their relative family live in is an apartment house? So confused, lol. :D
I've just spent ages reading up on this and I think the following is correct:
・apartment house, apartment building and apartment block all mean the same thing?
・an apartment house/building/block = a block of flats
・an apartment = a flat
アパート is abbreviated form for both アパートメント and アパートメントハウス. So アパート can mean either a flat or a block of flats.
マンション means pretty much the same thing -- both a flat and a block of flats. However, I've heard it is often used for larger flats and for larger blocks of flats.

It's "manshon", you're right. It's used for bigger and better apartments (or flats) or 2 family houses (which anyway are very rare in Japan). Apaatos are just normal apartments.
@mog86uk A Japanese マンション is a three-story house with an outdoor garage. I lived in one in 2009 when I visited Tokyo.- Thanks. I think I'm actually more confused by the American language than the Japanese. I just noticed storey is even spelt as "story"! O.o
- @mog86uk The original UK English has many words and phrases that are different from American English. A dog leash versus a lead, an apartment versus a flat, etc.
