The quiz in the readings is still off in its translations.Contextually 声明 is translated as an indo-language when it should read statement or proclamation, while 米 is translated as rice when it should translate as USA.

As there are over 300,000 Readings articles on JCJP, it's obvious that it's some kind of automated system creating those quizzes (not Beeant slaving away typing out ever single one of them, although that would explain why he always seems very busy! haha).
There does definitely seem to be something wrong with the way JCJP chooses which way to read many words. Often it picks rare readings or even archaic/obsolete readings...
For that 声明 example: on Jisho.org the "declaration / statement / proclamation" meaning is the only one tagged as a "common word". JCJP doesn't seem to take into consideration whether a reading might be common or uncommon... It just picks one reading at random to be used identically for all occurances.
The 米 one isn't too bad, as the default meaning of that word should be rice (こめ). Just that America is a much more common topic in news reports than rice is. If for 米 the "America" abbreviation is used instead of the "rice" noun, then the articles about rice would sound stupid instead. Can't win. :P
米 is a proper word but is just an abbreviation of 米国.
亜米利加 (あ・め・り・か) uses kanji only for their sounds and is an alternative way of writing America / USA. This word is where the name 米国 (べいこく) comes from--the べい sound simply coming from one of the main sounds of that rice 米 kanji chosen from 亜米利加.
