TIL Beppu is a really big, interesting town if you get away from the main strip. Today, まみちゃん took me around to the historic part of the city, we walked around for awhile before she took me to this cliff where you can see the whole place. I've lived here for a year, and saw more of it today in those few hours than I have this whole time.

For those who might not know - that is steam, not smoke, produced from various 温泉 (Hot Springs - Onsen) and 地獄 ( Jigoku - Hell [Entrances]) which are very common in this area.
