- Hmm, the only thing I found was "home image" and nothing particular really came up on google images or weblio example sentences either. Closest it gave was:
本発明は、家庭用の画像処理システムに適用することができる。
This invention is applicable to a home image processing system.
Where did you see this?January 15, 2015 at 9:00am - I did find that in chinese it does mean "like family" or something like thatJanuary 15, 2015 at 9:06am
- @freakymrq That example sentence you gave doesn't even contain the phrase 家庭像 but two different phrases: 家庭用 (household use) and 画像処理システム (image processing system). :P
@DS25 JCJP says "home image". I don't really know, but I don't think it means anything more than what it sounds like: a family (husband, wife and kids) living in a house--the appearance of this has the image of a home/family/household.
家庭 = {noun}: home, family, household
像 = {noun-suffix}: 1) image, figure, statue, picture, portrait; 2) figure, form, shape, appearance.
Some other similarly formed words with this 像 suffix:
・想像 = imagination (想 = thought, idea, concept)
・将来像 = vision of the future (将来 = future)
・宇宙像 = cosomology (宇宙 = cosmos, universe, space)
・人間像 = image of (an ideal) person (人間 = character, person, human)
・外人像 = one's image of foreigners (外人 = foreigner)
・犯人像 = criminal profile (犯人 = criminal)January 15, 2015 at 11:02am - For a second I thought maybe it could mean something like a family portrait or a family photo. However the following page is interesting for understanding 家庭像:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%AE%B6%E5%BA%AD
The phrase 家庭像 is used only once on that page, in the caption under the first image:
" 温かい家庭像のイメージ "January 15, 2015 at 11:23am - @mog I know it didn't have the exact phrase, that's why I said it's the closest I could find :PJanuary 15, 2015 at 12:35pm
- Ah okay. I've just realised that you probably haven't seen the phrase on JCJP before, which is from the level 6 vocabulary lessons:
http://japaneseclass.jp/lessons/vocabulary/6/53
I did actually see that you mentioned it was the closest you could find. However, what I didn't think about was the part where you were asking DS25 where she'd seen it written, when it is something already listed in Japanese on JCJP. Your reason for posting the things you did makes a lot more sense to me now. I couldn't get my head around why you thought quoting that sentence was useful in anyway before though, but makes sense now. ^^;January 15, 2015 at 1:07pm - @mog ha ha yeah I still haven't gotten to most of the level 6 stuff despite being level 6 for so long xD
I've been slowly picking at the vocab and kanji on here for a while but since I only use this website for just daily review I don't touch any of the lessons anymore.
Although you're right I should have checked to see if the word was on here first ha haJanuary 15, 2015 at 1:14pm - When I checked your profile I was surprised you haven't finished all the vocabulary and kanji yet. I can understand maybe not finishing all the lessons, but I thought you'd have probably cleared all the "New" words by now? o.O
家庭像 isn't actually in JCJP's dictionary (as you can see it doesn't have the icon on the lesson page) and it isn't in any other dictionary I've checked either. This may be because it's just a noun 家庭 with a suffix added to it. But then those other terms with the 像 suffix I listed earlier were actually taken from a dictionary! So I'm not sure whether this is really the reason for it...January 15, 2015 at 1:54pm - Thank you for the answers: the Wikipedia image kinda helped to make the concept more clear.
Anyway, I think that this word will be put in my memory in the same category as "rape blossom" :D
Fortunately it has a standard reading.January 15, 2015 at 5:06pm
