I need some help furthering my kanji learning. I'm having trouble finding a medium to learn the junior high kanji (2nd half of the jouyou kanji). Currently i'm using an anki deck, but the Anki format isn't working for me. I love Memrise, but i haven't found any courses that teach the On and Kun readings of junior high kanji. And as far as i know, Japanese Class only teaches random kanji that are found in the JLPT. Any ideas?

I'd definitely suggest Slime Forest Adventure, which is game you download onto your computer. The game format is a very basic RPG and it teaches how to read kanji meanings primarily. The free version has around 1,000 kanji though.

If you like the free version, the full version costs $20 and has 1,972 kanji which includes every single one of the 1,945 kanji in the pre year 2010 Jouyou list! The full version has readings training for all the kanji, however it doesn't teach every single On reading, but only focuses on one main reading per kanji.

This might not suit what you are after at all. For me I didn't like most of the other methods like Memrise, Anki, etc... Slime Forest Adventure (and JCJP) are perfect for me. ^^

If you are interested in how many kanji JCJP teaches in terms of Jouyou and JLPT, I calculated the totals here:

What didn't you like about Anki?

I'll second anki, its free on the desktop, web interface, and android. There is a pay iphone app, but use the web portal from there if you don't want to pay. Windows mobile devices only have the web interface. My only caution is that android does not display Japanese fonts, unless you either root the device and install a Japanese font, or make your deck in anki use a Japanese font. But this is an android problem, not an anki problem.

Android users, be careful. Its only select kanji that display in their Chinese form, so you might not notice it for a long time.

If you guys read my post, you'll find that i'm currently using Anki and asking for ALTERNATIVES....

    I definitely didn't suggest Anki. I said I didn't like it either... >_>

I was asking what it was about Anki that you didn't like, to have some idea of what you might be looking for. I mean I could just suggest you go to a kanji dictionary website and keep reading all the On and Kun readings, if it's just the readings that you're interested in.

Here's one where you can limit the results to all 1,130 highschool Jouyou kanji:
    http://tangorin.com/dict.php?dict=kanji&s=joyohs

(To do the search I did, simply click "kanji" and in the search field write only the filter tag "+joyohs" on its own, without the quotes.)

Or this dictionary, by setting the grade to 7:

@mog....things seem to read different in the early A.M hours. You're right, you said you didn't like it. I should stop trying to do productive work after midnight.
